I strongly recommend Jesse’s English lessons as they are fun and effective. He is passionate and a real professional. He focuses on each student’s goals and builds an effective lesson plan. He and M are the best English teachers I’ve ever met!
I have been working on my English with Jesse for about two years.
My goal was obtaining a high score on the TOEFL test. I thought speaking with a native English teacher twice a week would be effective to improve my speaking.
I clearly remember our first class. I was a little bit nervous because I was not used to online English lesson via Skype. However, once the class started, the anxiety went away and I really enjoyed the class. Time passed so quickly. He was extremely generous, humorous and I was fascinated by his teaching.
He has various teaching styles using online materials such as TED talks, YouTube videos, interesting articles from NY times and so on. I have learned lots of new expressions and idioms. Some of them were really funny and I really liked to use them in the class. Thanks to his lessons, I have been able to expand my English vocabulary.
Moreover, he was a strong TOEFL coach as he has solid knowledge and effective strategies about the test.
When I decided to focus on TOEFL practice with Jesse, I had struggled with getting requirement score which is higher than 20 in speaking and 23 in writing. Like all Japanese, the speaking section was one of the most difficult parts for me and moreover, writing was hell. He edited my TOEFL essays precisely and gave notes and useful links to learn connotation, collocation, synonyms and grammar so that I could learn more using such materials by myself.
In speaking session, we used a timer as if it was the real test, and practiced paraphrasing and built strong structures. Thanks to the class, I got “good” score in the independent speaking task, which was a truly remarkable achievement, in the end.
The English immersion program Jesse created for me has had a tremendous impact on my learning. Now I’m able to practice my speaking, listening, reading and writing almost every day. He even responds to some of the videos and blog entries I post!
What really amazed me was that he was also a great instructor who can help students to complete all application processes for graduate school successfully.
I had never submitted a CV, reference letters and essays in English. I didn’t even know what a CV was. My first draft of the CV was awful, but he instructed me step by step and gave me a lot of online samples and we discussed how to write an effective and strong CV. It was a fruitful experience that we improved my CV from 1st draft to 7th draft. I could learn more about how to write a good CV and, of course, it was also good writing practice. Thanks to him, I got the offer from London King’s college graduate study program.
If you are a serious learner and want to improve your English proficiency, I really recommend Jesse as your English coach, and two to three times a week lesson is much more effective than once a week lesson. Trust me!
After a year of Jesse’s classes, I began working with M too.
When I have her classes I feel like I’m talking to an English-speaking friend and enjoy it so much that I forget this is an English lesson, as she is punctual, instructive and really focuses on your goal. When I go off track, she gets me back. Thus, I think her lessons are fruitful. If I say, I want free talk today at the beginning of the lesson, she accepts my request and we enjoy casual talk( but she doesn’t forget to correct my English).
The suitable words describing her lesson are well-planned, well-organized, efficient, to the point. Furthermore, her class has a good tempo so it feels like time flies.
I am always impressed by her organizing skill and punctuality.
She also gives me useful feedback and confirms if there is any change or request for the lesson plan depends on the progress.
For example, we start our class with free talk, after that we move on to pronunciation practice for R&L which is my request, then, we move to adjective practice and speaking training using the newly learned adjectives.
The time distributed to each section is well balanced and organized.
She innovates unique and effective ways to improve upon my weaknesses and precisely takes notes regarding my mistakes and weakness and focuses on them in the next lesson.
When I worked on TOEFL speaking practice, she pointed out my weaknesses such as repeating the same expressions or sentences in both the introduction and conclusion, and pushed me to practice them until I could overcome them.
I think this is extremely effective to achieve students’ goals, which was getting a high score in speaking in my case.
The effectiveness is also supported by our pronunciation training, minimal pairs of R&L, which we have been working on for about a year. Both my listening and pronouncing R&L has much improved.
M and Jesse are highly intelligent, educated, competent and cultivated people.
If you learn English from such educated teachers, your English will sound intelligent.
They are truly the best teachers I have ever met in my life. In the end, if you have time and it meets your budget, I recommend having both M and Jesse’s lessons. Their speaking speed and rhythm are different so that you will get used to listening to English more.
